our roots

Honest Roots Design + Trade is a husband and wife team in Middle TN saving one tree at a time and giving it a chance for new life. Unlike many woodworkers, we don't purchase our wood in pristine Grade A condition, or get it shipped in from around the world. All of the wood used in our products is native, locally sourced, and locally milled for a minimal footprint. We start with the whole log to maximize the use of the entire tree. We only use trees that have been removed when necessary due to storm damage, construction waste, or hazard. We utilize well-known native trees such as oak, cherry, and maple, as well as some of the lesser-known but equally beautiful species like hackberry, hickory, pecan, and more. We also only use all-natural, food-safe wood finishing oils and waxes.

Honest Roots is more than a name, it’s a promise we make to our customers. It means that every item we make is rooted in an honest, pure, and environmentally-friendly methodology. We try to be as resourceful as possible when designing our boards to make sure that every piece of wood gets to fulfill its highest and best purpose. No two of our products are identical - each tells the unique story of its life as a tree and is ready to take on new life in your home. Join us in embracing the unique and distinctive beauty of thoughtfully-crafted, sustainably sourced, hand-made wooden products.

OUR INSPIRATION

The inspiration behind Honest Roots Design + Trade is a passion for the earth and it's bounties, and an appreciation for taking something discarded and transforming it into something beautiful.  We draw inspiration from the trees we salvage - from the entangled roots, the crooked trunks, to the hidden grain underneath the bark - all a story waiting to be revealed. Each piece is traditionally crafted from native Tennessee hardwoods- exclusively locally sourced. We aspire to create something to be cherished for generations to come and to provide the perfect utensils to make memories with loved ones.

We have a true love and appreciation for making something by hand. And we believe that the result is something with an enduring elegance, durability, and inspiration not found elsewhere.
